Overcoming Fears at a Thai Wellness Retreat
“Are you comfortable with needles? For the IV drip therapy.”
Yes, that’s fine.
“Are you alright with heights? For the ziplining.”
Errr, pardon?
“And would you be interested in a colonic?”
Umm …
After undergoing my initial evaluation for a wellness retreat at Layan Life located within the Anantara Layan Phuket Resort, I felt a mix of excitement and anxiety. Although I had prior experience with day spas in the UK, this five-night program introduced me to body assessments, medical evaluations, and luxury treatments. I reminded myself: This is quite different from a typical spa experience.
Situated just 30 minutes from Phuket airport, the Anantara hotel boasts a stunning array of accommodations overlooking the Andaman Sea, including 30 suites, 46 double pool villas, and 15 spacious pool residences suitable for families, all conveniently accessible via golf buggies. Nestled within lush forest, every room ensures privacy and features contemporary Thai aesthetics, along with indulgent amenities such as plush beds and expansive bathrooms. Whenever I wasn’t engaging in wellness activities, my villa served as a serene sanctuary for relaxation.
The retreat offers three-to-ten-day packages at its expansive two-storey Layan Life wellness centre, which opened recently, that incorporate innovative medical approaches combined with traditional Thai practices. Each program is tailored to meet individual goals—options include learning Thai boxing, enhancing mental strength through tai chi, or following a mindful eating plan.
Inside the center, adorned with light woods and warm neutrals, I discovered the freedom to customize my experience. Since I was a newcomer to retreats, I opted for a postural assessment and a 3D body scan. Moments after striking a pose for the camera, I viewed a detailed representation of my body on-screen, highlighting muscle and fat distribution as well as identified weaknesses. The scan quickly flagged an aching shoulder that had bothered me for weeks. Following this, I consulted with Pat, the physiotherapist, who provided a deep-tissue massage, followed by a personalized training session aimed at strengthening the area. It was an efficient and prompt diagnosis and treatment.
After undergoing a health consultation, it was time for the IV drip therapy. I lounged in a comfortable chair, connected to a bag filled with vitamins and amino acids designed to enhance cognitive function, while overlooking the vibrant jungle. I enjoyed reading The Old Man and the Sea, chuckling at the thought of what Hemingway might have made of this experience. If he were here, I thought, he would likely opt for the popular hangover drip. Post-treatment, I felt remarkably revitalized.
The highlight of my experience was the cryotherapy chamber. Dressed in football shorts, a mesh bra, and fluffy earmuffs, I stepped into the chamber, enduring three minutes at -110C, then emerged invigorated, my blood racing. This treatment is favored by elite athletes to manage inflammation, and I highly recommend it for anyone seeking a revitalizing experience. Ziplining also provided a thrilling sense of tranquility. Gliding through the treetops was surprisingly serene, allowing me to appreciate the forest and sea views from above.
Throughout the week, gut health emerged as a key focus. Doctors and practitioners discussed the importance of consuming pre- and pro-biotics. This theme also surfaced during my facial analysis aimed at improving skin health and in conjunction with my colonic session. The Beach House restaurant featured a specially curated menu by chef Filippo Tawil, offering nourishing meals free from gluten, dairy, and processed sugars, filled with high-quality macronutrients. Like every aspect of the retreat, guests had the flexibility to choose between health-focused meals or indulge in diverse culinary options.
Traditional Thai treatments included a rajasamnak massage, an incredibly gentle, meditative experience that sparked vivid dreams and surreal visions during the hour. Following my chakra balancing session, I felt a significant release within me. The repercussions of this deeply relaxing treatment lingered for days.
Among the six dining venues on the resort, Dara Cuisine stands out as a gem, offering a memorable array of modern Thai dishes such as vibrant curries and fresh fish alongside spicy vegetable selections. After dessert, I enjoyed stargazing on the rooftop, where observing the cosmos, especially glimpsing Jupiter, was as uplifting as the wellness treatments. The vast display of stars against the night sky provided a poignant reminder of life’s bigger picture.
I was initially hesitant to confess to my unhealthy habits, but the staff’s warmth and understanding eliminated any feelings of judgment. The emphasis was on moving forward, not dwelling on the past, offering guidance on sustainable self-improvement. I departed feeling rejuvenated and at ease, equipped with actionable insights for my daily life.
Set along a picturesque coastal expanse, the resort accommodates every preference for social interaction or solitude. In the evenings, the rooftop bar offers relaxed music and refreshing cocktails, providing opportunities to connect with fellow guests or simply watch the sunset in peace. The vastness of the resort allows for both communal spaces and quiet retreats, which include a 24-hour gym, studios for daily yoga and Pilates sessions, hydrotherapy pools, and direct access to the beach. The resort is located in a stunning bay, where I spent considerable time enjoying the sea.
Weeks later, I continue to reflect on my experience. I find myself considering gut health during shopping trips, pondering the meaning of the dreams I encountered, and pursuing the exercises Pat taught me. I would certainly classify myself as a devoted advocate for wellness retreats.
